After receiving well-rounded trainings and experiences in implementing various psychodynamic and behavioral approaches to psychotherapy, I am able to offer my clients an integrated individualized therapeutic approach based on their individual concerns, needs, and goals. During sessions I am able to switch between and among techniques to deliver what is needed at any moment. Specifically, I tend to use psychodynamic approaches (i.e., relational/ attachment, self, humanistic, gestalt) and cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT) during sessions with my clients. I have found that this 'two-prong' approach fits people very well because it addresses the current symptoms as well as prevents or minimizes future problems. We address both practical solutions to the here-and-now problems while understanding the underlying dynamics that fuel those problems.
I have helped individuals address a variety of concerns including but not limited to:
Therapy sessions are typically once per week and 45-minutes in duration; however, the frequency and/or length of sessions can be increased to better suit your needs based on scheduling availability. Attending sessions consistently is important to make the changes you want to see. You will be given a weekly time slot. This is your time. You will have it every week unless a conflict comes up. When a conflict arises, we will work to find another time to meet that week. Consistency and regular sessions are important to keep the flow of the work moving forward.
** Due to COVID, all sessions are currently being held via video.
During our first number of sessions, be prepared to share about yourself, your history (both the positive and negative), and what you are hoping to address during therapy. I will ask some questions to facilitate your sharing but will spend a majority of the time listening. I need to get to know you first. I have years, and possibly decades of your life, to catch up on while learning about your current life as well. I can't help you gain insight, give suggestions tailored specifically for you, or find true relief unless I know you very well.
As we continue to work together, I will help you recognize the patterns in your life, help you discover what underlying conscious or unconscious dynamics are fueling and perpetuating those patterns, and then help you decide which (if any) you want to change. I will help you find YOUR PATH and YOUR ANSWERS. My personal answers and ideas about what you should do, just like your parents'/ partners'/ friends' / teachers' ideas about what you should do, may or may not work for you. We have to work to uncover what work for you and I am skilled at helping people find their own answers. It is important to note that this doesn't mean that I will not have any ideas or suggestions for your to try, because, I definitely will. However, the ideas and solutions will be things to possibly try and see how they feel. If you try one, I will want to hear how it felt for you including what felt good AND bad, so that we can continue to find the answer that fits you.
You will know you are ready to stop sessions when you feel a sense of inner peace and calm self-awareness. You will like yourself, be more forgiving toward yourself, and have self-compassion of your past and current thoughts, feelings, and actions. You will understand the motives and internal forces that drive you. You will feel more in control and more capable to handle the up's and down's of life that are guaranteed to pop up from time to time. As someone who has been on both sides of the couch, I have experienced this personally and helped others get there too.
Once you reach this point, you may choose to discontinue regular sessions, do occasional sessions, or continue to give yourself the 45 minutes every week for self-care and time to reflect and process your life. Many of us aim to work out and maintain our physical health in various ways, so, why wouldn't we do the same for our psychological and emotional health?
Helping people live their best, happiest, and most fulfilling lives is very satisfying and fulfilling for me professionally. I love when someone gets to this point and I look forward to helping you get there too.
