EMDR is a powerful and effective tool to help people face, move through, and improve distressing memories, experiences, thoughts, and feelings associated with trauma. During trauma, the brain can experience a "log jam" of information (consisting of body sensations, thoughts, emotions, memories). While this is adaptive and done for survival, it can interrupt the free flow of circuits, information, and neurons in the brain leaving people feeling trapped and still "in" the trauma (even if it happened months, years, or decades ago). EMDR activates the Adaptive Information Processing system and helps remove the log jams to relieve the symptoms of trauma.
